A few weeks ago I went to to FanFan for the first time. The bakery scene in Edmonton has really boomed in the last little while. There are tons of new places to check out, and some tasty treats to eat. FanFan is just one of the recent places that I’ve been, along with Chocorrant and La Boule!
FanFan is located right off Whyte. It’s a bit small and easy to miss if you don’t know what you’re looking for. To be completely honest, I only happened to stop by because I was already planning on going to Ohana Donuterie and it’s really close! One thing that I liked about this place is that the owners/workers all natively speak french! When I came, there was also a french speaking patron and you could tell that he frequented the patisserie. They had really playful banter and it was just really nice to hear the sense of community (interesting fact, I speak fluent French).
They sell all sorts of things here, from gelato, macarons, savourey treats, to delicious little tarts and cakes. I opted to get the Zen, which comes with a lime biscuit, Strawberry confit, and a litchi cream. and a Vanilla Shell with Lemon italian meringue.
The Zen cake was really tasty! Not too sweet. The Lychee really gave it a nice balance and evened out all of the flavours. Texture-wise, it was a bit soggy for my liking, but it was really good otherwise.
The Lemon Tart was also very good. The tart was nice and crisp and very light. It went well with the lemon, and the meringue was definitely necessary to balance everything out.
Overall, I really liked FanFan! I’ll have to come back to give the rest of their pastries a try. Definitely recommend giving them a try if you’re in the neighbourhood.
On top of their delicious pastries, they also have gelato and sorbet! It was 1$ a scoop one evening and I had to go and take advantage.
I got a scoop of pistachio with hazelnut, and another cup with salted caramel and a scoop of their William Pear Sorbet. Creamy and delicious! Can’t go wrong with cheap and delicious gelato on a nice day.
