Last week I went to check out Say Uncle during lunch. I took the week off and went to several local joints that I’ve been meaning to go to. Say Uncle comes from the same owners as Northern Chicken and Sandwich and Sons. They are very newly open so there are some kinks to work out but it definitely shows promise. Sandwich and Sons were originally in the space for a brief period, then it was occupied by Aarde for a very short amount of time, and now is occupied by Say Uncle. Being on 104th, parking is limited to the street city parking, and is easily accessible by LRT.

Being on “staycation” mode, I opted to get a couple of cocktails. We went with the Kevin Karius and the Uncle Collins. The Kevin Karius is Hansen Moonshine, Strathacona Spirits Gin, housemade lemonade and sweet tea. This was refreshing and really easy to drink. I was surprised at how it didn’t taste very strong. The Uncle Collins was Bombay gin, lime, lemon, soda, cucumber, and basil. Also another refreshing drink and nice to drink on a hot day.

We started with the Chicken Liver Pate. This comes with Sourdough, and onions. The onions did complement the pate nicely, but the pate had a very bitter and alcohol-ey taste. After talking to the server, I learnt that they do use bourbon in the process of making the pate and maybe there was simply too much in this batch. Lydia from YEGcravings.com ordered the same dish earlier in the week and said it was very good and her favourite dish, so I would come back and order this to try it again.

I liked how you were able to order their burgers as singles, doubles, triples, or even their ‘Say Uncle’ which is five patties! I opted to keep it tame and just do a double which is $12. The burger comes with American cheese, Thousand island, pickles, and iceberg. The burger had a nice char on it and was very pleasant to eat. The bun was nice and fluffy and a good vessel to carry everything. My favourite part of this was the pickles. They had a nice brininess to it and balanced out the dish.

The other item we got was the rotisserie beef sandwich. This comes with arugula, horseradish mayo, and pickled peppers. This was another a pretty enjoyable dish. Generous portions of beef, and nice amount of pickles. I did wish there was more horseradish mayo, but overall good.

Overall, I had a decent time at Say Uncle! There are still a lot of dishes I want to try and their desserts look appetizing. Other than the one miss with the pate, everything else I had was decent. Again, they have only newly opened so I’m sure there are some things that will change but definitely check it out! Give the ‘Say Uncle’ burger a try ;).
