Just a quick post on Avila! I dropped in one summery afternoon where I was just walking on Whyte looking for a quick bite. I’ve heard really good things about this place and after having such a great experience with Venezuelan cuisine at El Fogon, I definitely wanted to try some of their food.

Patacones

I ordered one of their Patacones. This is an oversized green plaintain chips topped with your choice of beef, pork, or chicken. I opted to get mine with beef. Really good! They are big and filling. A bit on the saucey side and hard to eat but delicious.

Next we got the arepitas and tequenos. Who can resist deep fried cheese sticks?! These came out pipping hot. I thought the dough could have been a bit more seasoned and preferred the tequenos from El Fogon a bit more but overall tasty and great for a cheese-pull boomerang. The arepitas a mini arepas served with sour cream. Not bad but I would definitely get their filled arepas next time.

Cohino Frito

Last we just got some of their cochino frito (1/2 lbs per order). This is gluten-friendly and fried pork bites served with a guasacaca, which is a bright sauce traditionally made from avocadoes, citrus juice or vinegar, parsley, garlic, and chili peppers. Went great with the pork bites and really cut away the richness. Probably my favourite bite!

Overall, I had a good experience at Avila Arepas. Great spot for a quick bite. Avila and El Fogon are both comparable and far away, so I would just find myself at either location based on convenience. Definitely check either of them out if you’re looking for some Venezuelan food!
