I went to Asian Express Hotpot recently for Chinatown Dining week. It’s similar to Downtown Dining week, but for Chinatown. Participating restaurants offer set courses for 15 dollars. The deal at Asian Express Hotpot is similar to the late night deal that they offer regularly. For chinatown dining week, they offer a set hot pot with chicken soup base with five items – sirloin beef slices, white fish balls, sui choy, golden/enoki mushrooms, yams. For dessert, you get ice cream.

We actually opted to choose our own 5 items beacuse the Chinatown Dining week items didn’t appeal to us. For me, I got a couple of their house made mashes and beef slices. This was actually the first time I’ve ever done hotpot with only 5 options instead of AYCE. I found that it was a pretty good amount of food and I was relatively full. I did miss all of the varieties of the kitchen items that you are allowed to order with AYCE though, like dumplings, Chinese bun with condensed milk, etc.

If you’ve never been to Hotpot, the general idea is you choose your broth, make a sauce, and then choose your items. There’s usually many different sauces to choose from. I typically make two sauces. One with hoisin, sesame, peanuts, cilantro, garlic. And a lighter one with soy sauce, cilantro, green onions, garlic.

Overall, the quality at Asian Hotpot express is pretty good. I really enjoyed everything I had. I would opt to come back here and try AYCE. Give it a try!
