Last week, my friend Amanda from Hungry In Calgary, came for a visit. She and her Husband Matt were in town to visit with some friends, and we opted to for brunch at Barb & Ernie’s. Whenever she comes, I try to introduce her to very ‘Edmonton’ places, and this has been a place that I’ve been meaning to go for a long time.

It’s locally owned, now for multiple generations. It’s been an Edmonton staple for numerous years, and on many websites as a recommendation for top places to have brunch.

The setup of the restaurant is kind of like a house, like at The Manor and at Violino Ristorante. There are multiple dining rooms. We came at an opportune time and there was a table just clearing out. During our meal, there was a line that was starting to pile up.

For food, Amanda got the Schnitzel Cordon Bleu breakfast, I got the Bratwurst Sausages, and Matt and Jamie opted to get the combo meat eggs benedict.

The meat and potatoes breakfast comes with two eggs, hashbrowns, toast, and fresh fruit. The portions here are quite generous. The two bratwursts are huge, and delicious. They are perfectly seasoned and go great with their housemade mustard and curry ketchup. Very filling and delicious.

Amanda’s Schnitzel was enormous! It was quite large, with a crunchy breading and filled with cheese and ham. It was more than enough to share, and she ended up not being able to finish the whole thing. I thought it was a bit on the bland side, but it went great with the curry ketchup.

The Combo meat eggs benedict comes with bacon, sausage, and country ham. I think this is what I would opt to get if I come here again. I really like the variety of meats, and I always love a good hollandaise.

Overall, I had a really great experience at Barb and Ernie’s. I love how it’s locally owned, now by multiple generations and the general feel of the restaurant. The portions are great, and the quality is as well. Definitely give this place a try.
