Last week, I was invited to go Chutneys Indian Grill. It’s located far south east Edmonton. It’s a bit of a trek to get there, but definitely a good option for food if you’re coming in from the south or east, or taking the Henday. I had some brief correspondence with the owners, and they are looking to franchise and also looking to open a location downtown if all goes well. They are also available on SkiptheDishes as well.
The best way to describe this place, is that it’s a build-your-own type of experience. Think Subway, but with Indian food. You can choose from a bowl (rice or salad), a burroti (burrito using roti), or a platter. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to go myself, but I sent a couple of trusted collaborators on my behalf.
They got two platters; one platter was basmati rice, steak, garbanzo beans, vindaloo sauce, daal sauce with a side of chips, 2 slices of naan, veggie toppings. Peach
and mango chutney and cranberry red chilli chutney. This was ton of food for just $11.95! There’s so many options so you can really cater things to your own taste. The chutneys added a really nice sweetness and cooling element to the entire plate. Delicious!
The other plate had basmati rice, chicken, tofu, butter sauce, tikka masala
sauce, topped with some tamarind chutney and apple coconut chutney with side of fries. The fries here were the winner for the evening. Made fresh, and topped with Indian spices. They had the consistency and texture of Mcdonald’s fries! What’s not to like! To accompany the meal, the mango lassi compliments it really well. The yogurt gives a nice cooling affect if the curries are a bit too much on the spicy side.
Additionally, Chutney’s has veggie and meat samosas, and Ladoos (Peanut butter and oats), which were also really flavourful.
Overall, Chutney’s Indian Grill has a really unique concept when it comes to Indian Food. Not very many places are doing this right now, and I think it would perform really well downtown. While eating there, there were at least 5-6 take-out orders that people came and picked up. Hard location to sell, but if you’re ever in the area, give this place a try!
