If there’s one food in Edmonton that I would say is an Edmonton Staple, it’d be donairs (or green onion cakes). Everyone seems to have an opinion on which is the ‘best’ place to get a donair. Swiss Donair, Top Donair, Prime Time Donair, and of course, High Voltage (and World’s Finest on Jasper Ave), are most of the places that I’ve heard are people’s favourite.

To me, they are all excellent choices, with slight differences, which could sway a person one way or another. Either way, you can’t go wrong with one of those choices, and I’d choose based on where I am. I don’t often venture towards the south side, but was wanting to check out the new(ish) Bountiful Market. On my way there, it was finally time to give High Voltage a try. The parking lot is a bit intimidating, but once you get into the small lot, there are about a 8-10 stalls to park. It’s a small joint with its own little cult following.

As far as their menu goes, they do gyros, wraps, pitas/sandwiches, and of course donairs. Since we were heading to Bountiful Market, I didn’t want to over eat, so we opted to share one donair.

I heard that the service here can be spotty and near rude, but people have said it’s akin to the ‘Soup Nazi’ from Seinfeld, and the quality is worth the less than stellar service. That being said, I actually had a pleasant exchange, it wasn’t too busy, it was our first time, I asked for recommendations, to which our cashier was more than happy to give. They even offered to cut out donair in half since we were sharing!

The donair is less filled with meat than at many of the other donair shops that I’ve been to in Edmonton, but to me, it seemed very balance with the other ingredients. I’m often eating donairs very late at night, looking for some drunk-food, and I find that it really satisfies when it’s loaded with meat. Since it was in the middle of the day (and our first food of the day), it was the perfect fuel that’s not too heavy to get our day going. Though there was a balanced ratio of meat to other toppings, a single donair cut in half is still quite substantial!

Overall, I really enjoyed my experience at High Voltage. I really enjoyed how the wrap was grilled, which gave it a next crunch/texture. I would definitely recommend this place and would go back. I can see why many consider High Voltage one of the best places to get a Donair in the city!
